BACK
Henry Highland Garnet (1815-1882) was an abolitionist, minister, educator, and orator. Born into slavery, he escaped with his family and journeyed to New York City. He was well educated and became a skillful orator. He joined the American Anti-Slavery Society and spoke frequently at conferences. His speech, "Call to Rebellion," encouraged slaves to free themselves from their owners, but leading abolitionists found his views too radical. Later, he encouraged free blacks to emigrate to other lands where they would have more opportunities. During the Civil War, he helped recruit and support black soldiers. During his lifetime, Garnet pastored several churches and was chosen by Abraham Lincoln to speak to the House of Representatives, the first black speaker to address Congress. In 1881, Garnet was appointed U.S. Minister to Liberia, but died two months after his arrival.
