Phillis Wheatley. Phillis Wheatley, who was born in Senegal in 1753, was kidnapped, brought to Boston by slave traders, and sold to John and Susannah Wheatley. Educated and encouraged in her writing by Susannah Wheatley. Phillis published her first poem in 1767, and her first collection of poetry in 1773 -- the same year she was given her freedom. She was the first African- American woman in the United States to publish a book of poems.
