Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) never ceased working for civil rights and was instrumental in many nonviolent demonstrations, including the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Well known for his eloquent and inspiring speeches, his "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered in Washington, D.C. to approximately 250,000 people, was the inspiration for the first monument honoring an African American on the National Mall. The monument features a realistic carving of Dr. King and commemorates his life-long quest to secure democracy, justice, hope, and love for all people. At the age of thirty-five, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.
