Back:
Benjamin O. Davis, Sr. (1877-1970) was a United States army general and the first African American to achieve the rank of brigadier general. After finishing a high school cadet program in Washington, D.C., he began to pursue a military career. In 1898 he became a temporary first lieutenant in an all-African American unit during the Spanish American War. He rose through the ranks, serving in the Philippine-American War and in World War I and World War II. He taught military science college courses when he was not on active duty. During his years of service, segregation of the troops was still in force, which prohibited him from carrying out certain duties. Nevertheless, he was promoted to brigadier general on October 25, 1940. Among several medals he received were the Bronze Star Medal and the Distinguished Service Medal, which was given for outstanding service in solving problems that helped shape future War Department policy. Six days after the public retirement ceremony honoring Davis' 50 years of service, President Truman signed an Executive Order to abolish racial discrimination in the armed forces. Davis is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
