Behind every song is a songwriter. But how much, if anything, do we know about these talented artists who craft words into songs? What inspires them to pen lyrics that touch emotions? A few years ago, while visiting Wanamingo, a small southeastern Minnesota community within a half hour drive of my home, I came across a public posting about a songwriter in a public park. It was an unexpected find, but one which left me with a deeper appreciation of the hymn “It Is Well with My Soul.”

The new school year has begun. It’s chilly and rainy. Our daughters’ tennis and cross country meets are postponed due to the weather. I can’t avoid it any longer: Autumn has arrived. Even the leaves are turning a traitorous red.

My husband and I raised a son who was (and still is) high on the intelligence scale. He was asking deep questions from a young age. I think he would wake up in this deep frame of mind, because he often seemed to ask these kinds of questions while I was trying to get him, his sister, and myself ready on a work-day morning.
