George Liele (1750-1820) was born a slave in Virginia and was later taken to Georgia. He became a Christian, and his owner, a Baptist himself, encouraged Liele to preach to other slaves. He was the first African American to become an ordained preacher. Upon the death of his master in the American Revolution, Liele was given his freedom. He helped found two Baptist churches in Savannah, Georgia, before setting out with his wife and four children for Jamaica to avoid re-enslavement. He continued preaching and was the first Baptist missionary, preceding William Carey in that role. Despite adversity and imprisonment due to slaveholders' beliefs that he could cause a revolution among their slaves, Liele continued to preach, never taking a salary from his congregations but supporting himself by transporting goods by wagon. He worked to appease the slaveholders by writing a covenant, stating rules that church members would follow in order to attend services. His ministry is believed to have resulted in the addition of 8,000 Baptists in Jamaica.
