PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Celebrate Black History Month with this standard-size bulletin featuring a portrait of James Armistead Lafayette, and scripture: Whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. Ephesians 6:8 (KJV). A short bio on the back of the bulletin reflects James Lafayette accomplishments.

Back:

James Armistead Lafayette (1748/60-1830/32) was born a slave in Virginia and owned by William Armistead. During the American Revolutionary War, he joined the army as a spy under the leadership of the Marquis de Lafayette. James Armistead was a double agent, pretending to be hired by the British and serving them while taking information back to the Continental Army. The knowledge he gained while spying on Benedict Arnold and Lord Cornwallis was instrumental in helping the Americans defeat the British at the Battle of Yorktown. Following the war, a law freed slaves who had served as soldiers. Armistead was not freed because he was a spy. Several years later, with the support of William Armistead and the Marquis de Lafayette, Virginia granted James' freedom. He chose to add Lafayette to his name in honor of the marquis who had helped him. Later, he bought a farm, married, and had children. He also received a pension for his war service.
